Amitabh Bachchan, the Indian film actor, perhaps the most popular star in the history of Indian cinema, was born on October 11, 1942, in Allahabad(now known as Prayagraj). He is the son of late renowned Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. He did his schooling from Sherwood College, Nainital and later on pursued a degree in science from the Delhi University. His initial job was in Shaw Wallace and later worked as a freight broker for shipping.

He made his debut in the film called Saat Hindustani (1969) which was directed by K.A. Abbas.
The film failed on the box-office but he was noticed by filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherji and Sunil Dutt. Hrishikesh Mukherji (whom he treated as his Godfather), gave him a role in his two films, Anand and Guddi. Anand was the third film, that became a success and he got the Filmfare award for best-supporting actor. He was getting the roles but they were not significant. Finally, he got an opportunity to work in "Zanjeer", a role for which he wasn't the first choice. By then a new avatar had emerged on the silver screen, an "Angry young man".

In 1973, after the release of Zanjeer, he got married to Jaya Bhaduri. He became a father during the release of Chupke Chupke. During the shooting of "Coolie" on 26th July 1982, he was injured and taken to Breach Candy hospital. The entire nation prayed for his speedy recovery and by the god's grace, he was gifted with a new life. Mrs Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister(P.M.) of India, postponed her foreign trip and visited the hospital. After recovery, he came back on the silver screen, with Sharabi and Giraftar like hit movies.

In 1984, Amitabh Bachchan entered in the field of politics to support his long time friend, Rajiv Gandhi. He contested from Allahabad's against H. N. Bahuguna, former C.M. of Uttar Pradesh and he won by one of the highest victory margins in general election history. But he resigned in 1989 after being implicated in a bribery scandal that toppled Gandhi’s government.

After three years of political standoff from 1984 to 1987, Amitabh Bachchan returned to the films in 1988, playing the title role in Shahenshah, which was a success at the box office. Despite the success of his comeback film, his star power began to fade as all his subsequent films like Jaadugar, Toofan and Prince Azaad Hoon (all released in 1989) unsuccessful at the box office. Successes throughout this period like the action crime drama Hum (1991) and crime drama Aaj Ka Arjun (1990), in which he won the 3rd Filmfare Best Actor Award, it seemed like they could reverse the trend, but the momentum was temporary and his box office failures continued. In particular, Bachchan won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for his role as Mafia Dawn in the 1990 cult film Agneepath, despite the lack of hits. In 1992, after the release of the critically acclaimed  Khuda Gawah, he took semi-retirement for 5 years. With the exception of the delayed release of Insaniyat (1994), which was also a box office failure, he failed to seem in any new releases for 5 years.

Amitabh Bachchan later set up a company named Amitabh Bachchan Corporation, Ltd. (A.B.C.L.) in 1996.ABCL's strategy had been to deliver products and services that cover the entire Indian entertainment industry. Shortly after the company opened in 1996, the first film produced was Tere Mere Sapne, which was moderately successful and began the career of actors such as Arshad Warsi and Southern film actor Simran.

He moved to the small screen for hosting a game show called "Kaun Banega Crorepati" in 2000. In this year he starred in the film Mohabbatein which gave him his third Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. After this, he gave some hit movies like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in  2001, Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love in  2001  and Baghban in 2003.

Then in 2009, a movie  Paa was released in which he was playing his own son Abhishek's Progeria-affected 13-year old son. It won him the third National Film Award for Best Actor and the fifth Filmfare Best Actor Award.
